Body image of gender non-conforming individuals in Greece: Τhe role of self-esteem and perceived stress
Summary:
BACKGROUND: Non-binary people, like all LGBTI people, meaning lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals, are a vulnerable group for the development of psychological difficulties due to a variety of factors. In the international literature it has been reported that non-binary persons show high levels of anxiety or depression, and they might experience discomfort with their bodies. Furthermore, it has been reported that queer people are at great risk of developing eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this cross-sectional research is to study the body image of non-binary individuals in relation to their perceived stress, self-esteem, social body anxiety and their eating habits.

METHODS: The survey was conducted online and only adults aged 18-35 were eligible to participate. Participants were first asked to fill out some demographic information and were then administered validated questionnaires. Specifically, the questionnaires that were administered were the MBSRQ-AS Body Image Questionnaire (short version), the RSES-10 Self-Esteem Questionnaire, the PSS Perceived Stress Scale, the PSAS Social Body Stress Scale and the EAT-26 Dietary Habits Questionnaire.

RESULTS: The sample consisted of 124 participants. It was found that the level of education affects body image, suggesting that those with a higher level of education tend to evaluate more positively their appearance. Regarding Appearance Evaluation, it was found to be positively correlated with body satisfaction and negatively with perceived stress and physical social anxiety. Lastly, physical evaluation of appearance and physical social anxiety were found to be predictive factors of Body Satisfaction.

CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that perceived stress and social physique anxiety play an important role in the way non-binary individuals evaluate their appearance, and by extension in the overall sense of their body satisfaction.
