Forensic nursing. The necessity of it' s knowledge and application by the E.D. nurses
Summary:
Introduction: Greece emerges to follow the European and universal escalating statistics about violent cases. Forensic Nursing consists of the nursing procedure towards victims of violent behaviors. Forensic Nursing is the bridge between health and justice. While E.D. nurses are often the first health professional who the patient- victim gets involved with, the knowledge and application of Forensic Nursing practices become necessary.
In countries where Forensic Nursing is developed, nurses stand as collaborators to Justice Services and applicate Forensic Nursing practices and guidelines on incidents which are judged as forensic. Trained on Forensic Nursing, E.D. nurses having as priority to treat the life threatening situations, are undertaking the registering, selection, preservation and documentation of evidence that will help the victim move towards Justice.
Aim: The aim of this study was to locate the level of knowledge, education and application of Forensic Nursing practices by E.R. nurses and to describe the relationship between them and the social demographic, academical and education variables.
Research methods: It’s a cross sectional study. The sample consists of 89 persons, E.D. nurses and E.D. assistant nurses, of two level 3 General Hospitals of Attica. Used as a tool was the «General Questionnaire of Forensic Nursing– QGEF» and the «Knowledge Questionnaire of Forensic Nursing Practices – QCPEF» by Cunha M, and Liborio R.
Findings: The participants responded correctly scoring 78.4% at the questions of the Knowledge Questionnaire of Forensic Nursing Practices – QCPEF, letting us know that they have a satisfactory level of knowledge about the subject because of their practical experience and not due to their theoretical background. Lack of knowledge was revealed at recognizing some forensic cases, at trace preservation techniques and in being familiar with the law system, despite the sex, the age and the education of the participants.
Conclusions: The results pointed out the necessity of training nursing students and practicing nurses in delivering care to victims of violence, providing them with specific skills. Additionally, the creation of guidelines on how to manage with patients that were involved in a violent incident, is suggested for all the hospitals, accompanied by the training of nurses in their application.
