Attitudes and perceptions of public primary education teachers of the prefecture of Attica on the subject of their evaluation.
Summary:
The implementation of educational evaluation in Greece has encountered significant
obstacles and resistance. Starting from the recent Ministerial Decision No. 9950/GD5
of 2023, which defines the criteria for individual evaluation, the attitudes of teachers
towards evaluation in general, but also specifically towards what the Ministerial
Decision provides. The study was conducted using self-report questionnaires among a
sample of 120 Primary Education teachers in Attica. Based on the study that was
conducted, some central conclusions can be drawn. Based on the descriptive analysis
of the data, teachers consider that self-evaluation contributes substantially to the
improvement of the quality of educational work, having a very positive evaluation of
the parameters provided by the recent Ministerial Decision. Teachers have a positive
attitude towards peer evaluation, they consider that evaluation would improve the
climate in the school units and that it could lead to an increase in teachers' prestige.
Through the evaluation of the school unit, it seems that it addressed the phenomena of
relaxation and indifference of teachers. Also, the teachers in the study considered the
role of the head teacher and the school counsellor as catalytic. Overall, teachers consider
evaluation to be central to teachers' professional development, enhancing their strengths
and making them more effective in teaching, thus ultimately resulting in improved
educational progress for students.
