Contribution of Civic and Intercultural Education to the creation of inclusive classrooms. Views of secondary education teachers
Summary:
In recent decades, global economic and social upheavals and military conflicts have caused a rapid increase in migratory mobility and made Greece a pole of attraction for migrants and refugees. The strengthening of the country's cultural pluralism did not take long to make its appearance in school classrooms, with the number of immigrant students constantly increasing. The influx of migrants into host countries is unlikely to be terminated, so finding a solution to alleviate educational inequalities is a one-way street. The new circumstances and the need to provide equal opportunities for all students who enter the Greek education system call for us to negotiate the contribution of civic education in combination with intercultural education to the creation of inclusive classrooms. This thesis provides a comprehensive literature review and a theoretical framework that lays the foundation for understanding the principles of civic and intercultural education and their intersection with inclusive education. Through an analysis of the current state of inclusive classrooms globally, the research identifies best practices, challenges and gaps in achieving inclusivity. The thesis delves further into the key elements of civic and intercultural education, examining their impact on inclusive classrooms and the promotion of diversity. Implementation strategies for integrating these educational approaches are presented, with an emphasis on curriculum development, teacher professional development and culturally responsive teaching. Using a quantitative research design, the study explores the views of secondary school teachers on the aforementioned. The findings highlight the importance of civic and intercultural education in promoting inclusive educational environments, offering insights into effective practices and areas for future research.
