Breeing and owning pedigree dogs, an ethics and law analysis
Summary:
Companion animals are constantly increasing both in Greece and worldwide and it is no exaggeration (talking mainly about dogs and cats) to mention that they are now considered members of the family. The purebred dog is increasingly chosen based on the characteristics of each breed to best suit the needs of the new owner. In this paper, a historical review of purebred dog breeding is made with reference to the main canine groups worldwide on which the creation, registration and grouping of purebred breeds was based. Afterwards, an analysis is carried out on an ethical level for the benefits and negative ramifications of breeding, a part that will be approached from the point of view of well-being, eugenics, health, hubris, instrumentalization as well as speciesism. Finally, a legal approach to breeding and owning purebred dogs is attempted. Special attention is given to law 4830/2021 by analyzing the points concerning the purebred dog while highlighting any shortcomings based on the ethical treatment of the dog but also on concepts such as dignity, well-being and that of the animal as an object. This thesis could be the springboard for research in the Greek area, with breeders and owners of purebred dogs.
