Cognition and consciousness in fish. Fish as sentient beings. Electroanesthesia as a method to reduce stress during the slaughtering of farmed fish in Greek marine fish farming.
Summary:
In this diploma thesis we approach and document answers to the questions about the existence of intelligence, consciousness, awareness and emotions such as fear and pain in fish.
The scientific documentation of the existence of a conscious sense of pain and strain in fish will open the legal chapter of granting to these animals the right to a life free from pain and suffering.
In the first chapter we describe the phenomenon of speciesism, which concerns the established human perception of the inferiority of fish to humans and other vertebrate animals.
Furthermore, the mental abilities of fish have been explored, trying to substantiate the position that fish are animals which consciously have emotions, empathize and feel pain. In addition, the description of the ways in which fish are killed and slaughtered when caught by humans and the basic mechanisms through which this death occurs, will help us to understand the extent of the suffering that these animals experience when they die.
In the end, wishing to contribute, in a practical way, to the reduction of the stress of the fish in the Greek fish farming during the last moments of their lives, we will present electroanesthesia as a human method of killing them.
