The language of cinema in media news framing - Television coverage of Greek election periods
Summary:
The aim of this paper is to identify and analyse the syntactic elements of the
language of cinematography in television news programmes in order to determine the
manner and degree to which they constitute frames through the use of images.
Through the composite, interdisciplinary study we present, we aim to contribute to
our understanding of how the aesthetic and semiotic dimensions of visual imagery can
contextualise specific events which unfold during election periods of recent years, and
to develop a fertile terrain for further, future research. We argue that semiotics theory
and film theory have contributed significantly to the understanding and decoding of
the symbolic aspect of the image, with tools that communication studies, particularly
in the field of framing analysis in television media, can use to further systematise its
epistemology. The analysis of the sample we dealt with provided an interesting picture
of convergence between TV stations in the preferred frames for pre-election
reporting, even when there was significant variation in the aesthetic approach to the
image. However, all the tools of the language of cinematography are regularly utilised
to make sense of events and situations with as strong a focus as the verbal framing
elements.
