Interventional Studies for the Enhancement of Oral Language and Reading Skills of Students with or at-risk-for Specific Learning Disabilities: The Contribution of Morphological Awareness

In recent years, reading interventions in the context of special education have been gathering increasing attention because of the recognition of the need for learning disabilities (LD) prevention. Oral language and metalinguistic skills, such as morphological awareness (MA) contribute to beginning reading development, but research evidence is still lacking in terms of defining their instructional effectiveness. Specifically, even though the theoretical view supports the binding role of MAamong linguistic skills and its importance to the acquisition of early reading, it is still an understudied instructional component. The current dissertation aimed at addressing the aforementioned gaps through a meta-analysis and two educational interventions. The meta-analysis focused on the treatment outcomes of MA interventions for students with or at-risk for LD and their effects on oral language and reading skills. Moreover, the two interventions targeted morphological, phonological, phonics, pragmatics, narrative, and semantic skills of students with or at-risk for LD. Results revealed significant effects of explicit cognitive and metacognitive skill instruction of oral language, metalinguistic, including MA, and reading skills, which support the view that these skills contribute to the overall language and reading development. These findings add to the existing knowledge in the field of special education, because they provide insight on the effects of resource room intervention. The studies presented here advance our understanding of the effectiveness of reading interventions and the evidence-based instructional approaches, content, and strategies. The practical implications of the relevant suggestions are extensive and include the training of special educators and the design of reading interventions.
