Secondary School Students' Perceptions of Subjective Sense of Well-Being and Cyberbullying during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the perceptions of the subjective well-being of secondary school students (N=469), and cyber-victimization during the second phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was part of a broader research program conducted by the Laboratory of School Psychology, Department of Psychology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to investigate the needs and dimensions of psychosocial and learning adaptation of students during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic based on the perceptions of teachers, students, parents and psychologists. The sample consisted of 469 students from secondary education. Data collection was completed online and the questionnaires that were used was the Berne Questionnaire of Subjective Well-Being/ Youth Form (BSW/Y), the European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire (ECIPQ) and a demographic questionnaire. Results indicated that perceived subjective well-being does not seem to have a strong correlation with incidents of cyber-victimization, but only the scale of depressed mood. Also, gender and level of education seem to be related to the subjective well-being as girls and high school students reported lower levels of well-being. However, no statistically significant differences emerged regarding cyber-victimization. The above findings contribute to a better understanding of students' subjective well-being and cyber-victimization during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need to design appropriate prevention and intervention actions in the school community.
