Adolescents' Perceptions of Subjective Well-Being and Goal Orientation Regarding Their Involvement in Sports
Summary:
Over the years, the physical and mental condition of the individual, as well as their approach to achieving good health, has been a concern for various sectors. On the other hand, participation in sports seems to interact with the goal-setting process.
This study investigates the extent to which dimensions of subjective well-being and goal orientation differ in adolescents involved in team or individual sports and those who do not participate. The research involved 138 high school adolescents from public schools in the wider Athens and Patras areas. Data collection included a Demographic Information questionnaire, the Personal Achievement Goal Orientations questionnaire from the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales (PALS) (Midgley et al., 2000), and the Subjective Well-being Perception questionnaire (Grob et al., 1991).
According to the findings, a significant percentage of adolescents who engage in sports for many years appear to have better levels of subjective well-being, while parental involvement in sports seems to be positively related to adolescents' athletic activity. Additionally, the absence of parental sports engagement is linked to with higher levels of achievement-avoidance orientation in adolescents, and research indicates adolescents experience life satisfaction when they pursue goals with a learning orientation.
The current study offers important insights into the correlation between sports and athletic activities pursued by individuals, and the psychological well-being of adolescents, as well as their approach to achieving their goals.
