Predictors of School-based Parental Involvement in Primary and Secondary Education in Greece
Summary:
The goal of the present study was to examine the parent and school related factors that correlate with and predict parental school-based involvement in primary and secondary education in Greece. The sample consisted of 316 parents from the region of Attica. The participants completed self-report questionnaires regarding their sense of school cultural congruity (School Cultural Congruity Scale), the level of their school-based involvement (Family-School Engagement Scale), the level of parental support (Parent Support Scale) and self-efficacy towards their child (Parent Efficacy Scale), the level of parental stress (Parental Stress Scale [PSS]), the perceived barriers to engagement (Barriers to Engagement Scale), the roles and responsibilities regarding their child’s education (Roles and Responsibilities Scale), the perceived parenting styles and dimensions (The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire [PSDQ]) and also a questionnaire that included demographic data. Significant correlations were identified between school-based involvement and parent and school related factors as well. Significant differences between the foreign group and the group of Greek parents were reported regarding the parent and school related variables. Moreover, higher levels of school-based involvement were reported in the group of parents with a middle family annual income compared to the lower annual family income group of parents. Higher levels of school-based involvement were reported in the parental groups of higher educational background compared to the groups of lower educational background. In addition, higher levels of school-based involvement were identified in primary compared to secondary education. Finally, parent’s country of origin, parental support, social self-efficacy and parental stress were significant predictors of parental school-based involvement.
