From Ritsos' Poetic and Painterly Work to the German Expressionist Painters: an intermedial hermeneutic approach.
Summary:
The object of study of this thesis is the poetic work of Yiannis Ritsos written during the period of the seven-year military dictatorship - specifically, from the collection The Fourth Dimension to the collection Gignesthai -, seen through an inter-artistic/intermediate interpretive prism. In particular, we are concerned with the issue of (re)presentation, that is, the different ways of visualizing the expressive tension of Ritsos’ poetic discourse as it emerges at the points of its condensation, in such a way that the visual-and-verbal figures stand out as rhizomatically articulated. In order to make this clear, we run through visual examples of German Expressionism, in which the sensory received shock of the emergent present moment is inscribed and thematized as a distortion of the depicted forms and, thus, as a reversal of their visual relations. In this context, the aforementioned expressive means (of poetry and painting) are studied alongside, in order to explore their points of convergence and divergence. The aim of the present thesis is to identify and analyze those parameters that inscribe Ritsos’ poetic discourse in the aesthetic paradigm of modernism, such as, the dislocation of linear time and its subsequent restructuring, the painterly and sculptural attribution of the momentarily emergent Event that bears a particular materiality, the question of the chiasmatic presence/absence of the spatialized visual/tactile volume, as well as the multi-layered thematization of the visible and invisible aspects of reality, as synchronically emerging.
