Teachers' Perceptions on Academic Optimism and Professional Burnout
Summary:
Academic optimism describes the beliefs and attitudes of teachers who anticipate
achieving positive outcomes in terms of student achievement and constitutes of three
interrelated dimensions: teachers’ self-efficacy, academic emphasis and teachers’ trust in
students and their parents. The present study investigates teachers’ attitudes about academic optimism as individual characteristic and the correlation with teachers’ professional burnout. Additionally, it is studied whether the demographic variables, years of work experience and school level at which teachers are working, could predict academic optimism and teachers’ professional burnout. The sample of the research was 338 teachers working in primary and secondary education in Greece. Participants completed Teachers Academic Optimism Scale (Hoy et al., 2008) and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (Stamm, 2009). The findings support that academic optimism has a negative relationship with professional burnout and teachers’ self efficacy dimension has the strongest negative correlation. Additionally, the results showed that teachers who work in primary education scored higher in academic optimism, in relation with their colleagues who work in secondary education. The results show the importance of developing teachers’ academic optimism as a protective factor against professional burnout.
