Cultural Orientations, Acceptance-Rejection by Peers, and Psychological Adjustment of Immigrant Adolescents
Summary:
This dissertation investigates the cultural orientations adopted by adolescents with an immigration background, their psychological adjustment, and the acceptance or rejection they experience from their peers. The research sample consisted of 430 adolescents with an immigration background attending first and second grade of high school. Participants were administered self-report questionnaires assessing depressive symptoms (Salokangas et al., 1995), self-esteem (Rosenberg, 1965), life satisfaction (Diener et al., 1985), ethnic/national orientation (Nguyen & Von Eye, 2002), and acceptance-rejection by peers (Asendorpf & Motti-Sefanidi, 2017). Results indicated that adolescents tend to choose national orientation over ethnic, while preferring the strategy of assimilation more. Gender and generation of migration were associated with the cultural orientation chosen by adolescents. National orientation was positively related to life satisfaction and acceptance by peers, while ethnic orientation was associated with life satisfaction and self-esteem. Finally, assimilation had the most positive outcomes for the psychological adjustment of adolescents with an immigration background, whereas regarding acceptance by peers, assimilation was associated with more positive outcomes, and the lowest level of adjustment was observed in adolescents adopting the strategy of marginalization. Findings are discussed in relation to international literature on acculturation and adjustment of adolescents with an immigration background.
