nursing approach to children with epilepsy in the special school
Summary:
Introduction: Epilepsy is a widespread neurological disorder in childhood, which poses significant challenges in the school environment. School nurses play a critical role in supporting children with epilepsy.Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the role of school professionals, particularly school nurses, in the management of children with epilepsy in special schools. Additionally, to recognise the obstacles school nurses face in their daily practice, the way of managing children with epilepsy in the school environment, as well as the effect the educational programs can have on the knowledge of school nurses regarding epilepsy.Methodology: A systematic review was performed. The literature was searched in the database Medline (Pubmed) for the period 2010-2023. The systematic literature review was based on the PRISMA proposal guidelines. The keywords used were in the English language and included the terms "epilepsy/seizure" and "school nurse".
Results: 12 studies were selected in the present systematic review, based on the inclusion criteria. Regarding the knowledge of professionals in the school environment, gaps were identified, which leads to an increase in levels of insecurity in the management of a child with seizures in the school environment. In addition, according to the barriers to the performance of the role of school nurses were found to be confusion about their statutory duties, a lack of adequate nursing staff, as well as the absence of individualized action plans. Improving the level of knowledge and attitudes of school nurses could be achieved by providing continuing education programs, which seem to have encouraging results. Conclusions: Improving the knowledge of professionals in the school environment for the effective management of seizures in the school environment can be achieved by developing appropriate individualized action plans and educational programs which, in addition to improving knowledge, will also contribute to changing and improving their attitudes towards epilepsy.
