Proposed measures for the welfare assessment of pasture-based cattle in Greece
Summary:
Countries with a long tradition of extensive cow-calf farming, such as New Zealand, have in recent years implemented welfare assessment programmes for pasture-based cattle, the results of which show that it is feasible to assess the welfare level of animals in extensive farming by identifying appropriate welfare criteria and measures. The development of such standards enhances the quality of the extensive cattle farming sector by providing a valuable feedback and benchmarking tool to the farmer on the risks, problems and possible solutions to animal welfare issues on a farm. In Greece, almost half of the cattle population is raised in an extensive environment. The greatest challenges to the welfare of this population are caused by the drought of the summer months and the associated risk of malnutrition, prolonged thirst and heat stress. In addition, the low frequency of housing and health checks, the locally high risk environment and the limited familiarity of cattle with humans raise concerns about the welfare level of these animals. In practice, there is no standard for assessing the welfare of pasture-based cattle in the country and a very limited documented knowledge on the subject exists. Referring to international expertise and the most authoritative sources of literature, the author of this paper has attempted to highlight the importance of this multifactorial issue. The measures proposed in this project for the assessment of pasture-based cattle welfare in Greece are a first step in the research for the creation of a coherent and valid standard for the assessment of the welfare level of cattle, which can be applied to all extensive cattle farms in the country. Further research on the subject and evaluation of the applicability of these measures at farm level is necessary.
