Summary:
This thesis is part of the broader field of research in comparative literature on the metamorphoses of literature into other art systems. More specifically, it studies the transposition of M. Karagatsis' «Prezakis’ Holy Week» (1951), Nikos Nikolaides the Cypriot's «The Skeleton» (1924), K. G. Karyotakis' «The Scull» (1920) and «The Dreamer» in graphic novels through the prism of intermediality and narratology. The study thus highlights the mutually coexisting dynamic that develops during the encounter between the two expressive idioms —that of the literary prose and that of the graphic novel— which, without abandoning the characteristics of their medial identity, lend each other not exactly their own expressive tools but the results of their action. Words and their certain narrative arrangement in prose create mechanisms of visualization, constituting a narrative of pictorial order, while the images in graphic novels become speaking, narrating, thanks to their linear succession and their direction, the development of the plot. With the constant concern of this mutual transductive relationship between the two artistic realities, the inherent visual qualities, which are embodied in the written word, are sought, as well as their transcription in the graphic idiom, on the basis of three artistic categories, that of description, spatial time and cinematography. Subsequently, the study expands on the narrative components that the genres, focusing on how they respond to each other on the basis of their conventions, as determined by their genre, to the axis of titles, narrators, temporality and characters.
