Inclusive practices for students with SEN in a primary school classroom - Case study
Summary:
Establishing inclusive schools where meaningful learning and participation is encouraged for all students has emerged as a necessity, with countries around the world increasingly adopting inclusive education as official policy and practice. However, for students with SEN, meaningful access to a classroom curriculum that effectively meets the strengths and individual needs of these students remains an elusive issue. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate through a case study the inclusion of children with special educational needs in 4th Grade of a primary school in Attica. Data was collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers. The results of the study showed the necessity of cultivating a culture of inclusion in this particular school context. In addition, they highlighted the need to implement differentiated instruction throughout the classroom, general education and parallel support teacher collaboration and co-teaching between teachers. Creating an inclusive environment requires training classroom students to function as a learning community.
