Evaluation strategies in web hotel reviews
Summary:
The research area of this thesis is text linguistics and discourse analysis with a view to
study negative hotel reviews in Greek. Individual writers of these negative reviews tend
to use specific linguistic expressions when describing their experience. The main aim of
this thesis is to identify repeated linguistic patterns and evaluation strategies through
adjectives when writers express their disapproval (or approval) in comments in Greek
language reviews on the TripAdvisor platform (33,000 words approx.). In text analysis
the software AntConc was used in order to find frequency lists and collocations in the
data. The findings point out that negative reviews have a specific structure and mainly
involve particular linguistic patterns, in combination with the extensive use of evaluative
adjectives. In particular, negative comments are related with positive ones with the use
of explicit lexical expression, various discourse markers or connective phrases. In
addition, evaluative adjectives are a basic means of evaluation in hotel reviews, as
comments are revealing of the writer’s positive or negative stance, which orients readers.
These findings can contribute to a better understanding of how writers express their
negative experiences, by evaluating products or services online.
