The Fold of Memory: «Poems and Images» by Nikos Houliaras
Summary:
The subject of study of this master’s thesis is the four collections of Visual Poetry by Nikos Ηouliaras, published from 1983 to 2000, in which poetry and painting are articulated in conjunction. The paper seeks to identify the fundamental aesthetic, morphological and semantic features of intermediate work and, in particular, to research the ways of espousing painting in poetry, proposing a method, of verbal and plastic shapes analogy, which is not limited to the mediation that is implied by their common content, but it is mainly based on their common structural function in the system of aesthetic text. The inter-artistic aim of this thesis presupposes on the one hand the overcoming of the normative restrictions that are dictated by the regimes of unrepresentable and general agonistics of discourse genres (Jean François Lyotard) and on the other hand the substantiation of the dialectical conjugate of the arts through, in the opinion of Jacques Rancière, the modification of the sayable and the visible into a conceptual, metamorphic level of equivalence and, in the opinion of Gilles Deleuze, of any type of materiality’s fold within the zone of inter-fold (Zwiefalt). According to our research hypothesis, poems and images are unfolded by the folds of memory, the "psychic matter" that is transformed, respectively, to verbal and painting matter. Analysis and interpretation are structured along three axes. Utilizing Deleuze's theory of difference-repetition, pure form of past and fold, the tripartite interpretative scheme, of simulacrums of the self, the space-body and the time-pendulum, is conceptualized. The three terms are constituted both as themes and as structural principles of organization of the text. Through the identification of the formatting techniques the spatial architecture of the poems is verified as spatialization and aestheticization of the verbal matter while the Gestalt shifts from the class of painting to the class of poetry and the Rhythm maintains her unity. The poetics of Houliaras is constituted as a body that -based on the principle of Expressionism- is deformed, differenciated and folded, in space and time, in three spans-levels that, nevertheless, are included to the chronotope of memory while the artist himself becomes a mold, producing poetic and painting simulacrums.
