Successful management of patients undergoing atrial fibrillation catheter ablation
Summary:
Introduction: Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice. Catheter ablation for reducing recurrent atrial arrhythmias and also reducing the atrial fibrillation burden is well established. Furthermore, recent studies show its superiority over anti-arrhythmic therapy. However, up to 45% of patients show recurrence of atrial fibrillation within 12 months after catheter ablation.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate atrial fibrillation catheter ablation success rate.
Material and Methods: A total of 104 patients (66 men, 38 women), age 63.6 ± 7.2 years, treated with catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, in a large general hospital of Athens, between February 2021 and January 2023. Comprehensive data on patient characteristics and treatment results were collected. Treatment success was defined as the absence of episodes of atrial fibrillation/atrial tachycardia, or the recording of 1 episode of atrial fibrillation/atrial tachycardia that ended spontaneously (within 24 hours), within a period of 6 months after atrial fibrillation ablation.
Results: At 6 months after atrial fibrillation ablation procedure, 92.3% of patients were free of recurrent atrial fibrillation. The multivariate analysis included the following variables: age, gender, types of atrial fibrillation, Body Mass Index, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease, frequency of smoking and frequency of alcohol use. No correlation was observed between the above variables and freedom from recurrent atrial fibrillation. One patient, who was included in the failure rate, underwent a second atrial fibrillation ablation procedure, during the study period.
Conclusions: Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation is a relatively safe procedure with good results as regards the maintenance of sinus rhythm. Patient-related factors are the most significant predictors of atrial fibrillation ablation procedure success during the first 6 months.
