Νarrative techniques in the prose work of Giorgos Ioannou.
Summary:
The subject of this thesis is the investigation of the narrative techniques in the original prose work of Giorgos Ioannou. Given Ioannou's interest in rendering the fragmentary and piecemeal instead of the grand narrative, the construction of his narratives through thematic fragments, which are joined together through the process of association and memory recall, the aim of the study is to specify the terms by which these individual thematic elements are linked within the narrative constitution of his prose in order to reconstruct the fragmented internal life of the narrative subject and give it meaning. The methodological tools used come from Gérard Genette's structural narratology, but also from Doritt Cohn's theoretical typology, which, based on stylistic, textual and psychological criteria beyond linguistic ones, provides a more systematic and coherent terminology for narrative models of presenting consciousness in fiction. The paper is structured as follows: The first chapter investigates the narrative techniques of rendering the hero’s thought and consciousness in both first-person and third-person narration. It also examines the degree and type of effect of the interior monologue technique in Ioannou's texts and the adaptation of its stylistic features to his unique narrative discourse. The type of narrator and the relationship he creates with the consciousness he narrates (distancing or merging) are also examined based on the distinction between dissonant/consonant narration in D. Cohn's theoretical model. In the second chapter, the investigation focuses on the temporal aspects of the narrative in the light of the categories of time highlighted by G. Genette's theory, and especially on frequency, elements of which structurally define the narrative organization in Ioannou's prose. In the third chapter, the narrative rendering of space is examined, the intersection points of the real landscape with the landscapes of imagination and memory, the alterations brought about by the subjective viewpoint on "objective reality" and the ways in which elements of the experienced space are articulated to create evocative and significant "settings" in Ioannou’s prose.
