Unravelling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education of refugee and migrant children in Greece
Summary:
In 2020, with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the social groups that was severely affected by the protection measures were the children with a refugee and migrant background who lived in the facilities in Greece. The purpose of this thesis is to unveil the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education of refugee and migrant children in Greece, as well as the measures taken by the Greek authorities and other agencies to address the hindrances.
The method used in this thesis is the literature review with the PRISMA method. The choice of this method was made with the aim of an objective approach and assessment of the existing literature, in order to identify and report the problems that emerged in the education of refugee and migrant children in Greece due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures implemented to address them.
The literature review identified effects caused by the measures taken to protect citizens from the coronavirus as well as the efforts made both by the Ministry of Education and by various agencies to support refugee and migrant children to continue attending the educational process.
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, children with migrant and refugee backgrounds faced with extensive barriers regarding their access to the distance education process. This had the effect of excluding them and slowing down the process of their education. To combat the problem, the Ministry of Health, International Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations collaborated and tried to contribute to solving the participation problems.
