The effect of solar radiation on humans, prevention of its consequences, attitudes and perceptions of the population of Western Macedonia as a case study
Summary:
This work deals with the effect of solar radiation on humans. Initially, the paper refers to solar radiation and human health, the factors that influence exposure to solar UV radiation, the mechanisms that support the effects of UV radiation on health, the damage from exposure to UV radiation, as well as protective behaviors and preventive strategies. Then, quantitative research is carried out with the aim of investigating the prevention of the consequences of solar radiation through the attitudes and perceptions of the population of Western Macedonia as a case study. According to the results of the survey, the participants use sunglasses the most for sun protection, followed by the sun protection index, the use of sunscreen and avoiding the sun in the middle of the day. They also argued that it is worthwhile to use sunscreen, they prefer to be in the shade rather than in the sun in the middle of the day, they worry about sunburn when sunbathing, as well as the possibility of getting skin cancer, and they think it is easy to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat and clothing. Finally, participants argued that babies under 1 year of age should not be exposed directly to the sun, UV radiation causes the skin to age faster, and children should use sunscreen with an SPF ≥ 30.
