Correlation of PD-L1 expression and treatment response in non-small cell lung cancer patients in immunotherapy
Summary:
Background: NSCLC is the most common lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Recently, multimodality treatment has included immunotherapy and is being assessed as a modality for neoadjuvant treatment in resectable lung cancer stages with promising so far results.
Aim: The aim of this study is to demonstrate our center’s experience in implementing combined neoadjuvant chemotherapy and immunotherapy in operable stages of NSCLC.
Material/Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of our department and we enrolled 10 patients with NSCLC stage IIB – IIIB who received combination of neoadjuvant nivolumab plus platin-based doublet chemotherapy for 3 cycles. Results: 90% of patients concluded neoadjuvant treatment without major complications. 40% of them demonstrated partial response. 2 patients underwent radical surgical therapy and the pathologic data showed downstaging of both primary lesion and lymphnodes. Both patients did not experience significant surgery-related morbidity.
Conclusions: Combination neoadjuvant chemotherapy – immunotherapy is safe and effective. Surgery post induction treatment is feasible with acceptable morbidity.
