Summary:
This Master's thesis will deal with the topic of machine translation of nutrition and health texts and with the evaluation and analysis of nutrition and health texts in the field of computer linguistics. In addition, this diploma thesis entitled “Machine Translation of Nutrition and Health Texts: Evaluation and Analysis” is being prepared as part of the seminar “Computer Linguistics”.
The main topic of this thesis is “Machine Translation (MÜ)” from the field of Artificial Intelligence. It should be noted that the machine translation is worked with the world's most well-known MÜ system, Google Translator, so that the machine translation can be analysed more accurately. It is a question of how successful the translation of the MÜ system from written language can be and, consequently, to what extent artificial intelligence is able to process human languages.
The Master's thesis is divided into two parts, on the one hand there is a theoretical part in which the theoretical foundations appear. The first part contains chapters dealing with computer linguistics, areas of application of computer linguistics and systems of mechanical translation. The methodology is further explained. From this it can be concluded that both the characteristics of the texts and the readers as well as the choice of the system are analysed. The second part of the work is a practical part. The second part of the master's thesis demonstrates in practice how machine translation works and what errors may appear during the process. The results and conclusions are then analysed and presented using diagrams.
The diploma thesis consists of four chapters. A constant theme of the first chapter is the theoretical foundations of computer linguistics and machine translation. This chapter examines the definitions of computer linguistics, machine translation and translation difficulties. It is important to understand the definitions of computer linguistics, machine translation and the difficulties of translation. The first chapter of this Master's thesis deals with key linguistic questions of machine translation and the difficulties of translation in the context of computer linguistics. In order to answer these linguistic questions, this thesis begins in the first chapter with an extensive examination of the theories of computational linguistics, machine translation and the difficulties of translation.
The second chapter then describes how the five texts selected on the subject of machine translation are presented. Importantly, five scientific texts dealing with the topic of nutrition in the context of health are selected for machine translation. The intention of the second chapter of this Master's thesis is to present the central features of the five texts that will be further analysed and selected on the subject of machine translation. Thus, five scientific texts with special terminology from the fields of biology, medicine and nutrition dealing with the topic of nutrition in the context of health can be described and presented.
In the penultimate chapter, the methodology that deals with the process of selecting, collecting and editing texts is described in the context of the five texts selected for machine translation.
In the last chapter, the analysis of the five texts selected for machine translation is given. Consequently, this thesis describes the central difficulties of translation, which include difficulties such as divergences, problems with syntax, lexical gaps, other errors and socio-cultural characteristics.
Finally, the paper concludes with a summary of the results.
