Summary:
This doctoral thesis researches on the field of Greek and Turkish shadow and puppet theatre in the Greek communities of Constantinople, Smyrna and Cyprus, between the years 1817/1893-1932/1931, respectively. It also contains short notes on the following course of each spectacle. It aims at offering answers and an assessment, that the Greek side has been seeking for.
Corpus of thesis is divided in two main, analytical chapters (I. Greek and Turkish shadow (Karagkiozis & Karagöz) and (Glove & String) puppet theatre in the Greek communities of Constantinople, Smyrna (and their environs), 1817-1932, II. Greek and Turkish shadow (Karaghiozis & Karagöz) and puppet (Glove/String/Body puppets) theatre in Cyprus, 1893-1931). These chapters lay after Aknowledgements, Abbraviations, Prologue, while Conclusions (III) are followed by a triple Epimeter (IV), bilingual Abstract (V), Bibliography/Resources’ list (VI) and Indexes (VII). Every chapter consists of two sections (shadow theatre, puppet theatre) and smaller subsections, depending on the main theme-target (Constantinople, Smyrna, Greek / Turkish shadow / puppet theatre) and on the evaluation of traced evidence (e.g. relation between Smyrna theatre – puppet/shadow theatre). The final pages of every chapter and section are dedicated to double summary tables (alphabetical, chronological) and indicative accompanying illustrations.
