Giant cell tumors : Clinical , pathological and imaging review
Summary:
Giant cell tumors occur in young people aged 20-40 years. Their cause has not been clarified yet. Most giant cell tumors are benign. They are mainly located around the knee, distal radius, proximal humerus, upper and lower extremities (mainly phalanges of the fingers). Pain is the most common symptom, while swelling and deformity are associated with more extensive lesions. Diagnosis of giant cell tumors is made by X-ray of the affected bone, CT and MRI, functional positron emission tomography and bone scans. Surgery is the standard of care for the treatment of giant cell tumors. In many cases adjuvant therapy (liquid nitrogen, phenol and argon beam coagulation) and topical or systemic bisphosphonates such as zoledronate. Denosumab is also used. They have a good prognosis and rarely metastasize to the lungs.
The purpose of this master thesis is to present the most common giant cell tumors, specifically giant cell tumors of bone, giant cell tumors of tendon sheaths, osteosarcomas rich in giant cells and giant cell tumors of soft tissues.
This master thesis is a literature review. The literature search was performed in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The keywords used are Giant Cell Tumors, Soft Tissue Neoplasms, giant cell tumor of bone, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath, giant cell-rich osteosarcoma, giant cell tumor of soft tissues, clinical presentation, imaging, histology, epidemiology, treatment. All articles written in the English language were included. No restriction was placed on publication or type of articles.
