Medical abortion up to 18th weeks of pregnancy: a retrospective study of Alexandra Hospital
Summary:
Although the vast majority of abortions occur in the first trimester, approximately 15% of abortions worldwide occur in the second trimester. The aim of this study was to investigate the medical termination of pregnancy up to the 18th week of pregnancy at the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens at Alexandra Hospital. The study sample consisted of 205 women who underwent medical termination of pregnancy at the early pregnancy unit of this department during the period 2019-2023. The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol was used for medical abortion. The most successful regimen involved the administration of a pill of mifepristone (200mg) followed after 36 hours by 4 pills of misoprostol (200+200μgr) vaginally, with 3 hours of time between them. On average, the fetus was expelled in 6.64 hours. A BMI ≥25, older female age, older gestational age and number of previous spontaneous abortions increased the time to abortion. In addition, bleeding lasted 12.17 days on average. Older women and women with previous deliveries had a shorter duration of bleeding. Also, a moderate level of pain was found and the frequency of surgical evacuation was 1.98%. In addition, a high acceptance and willingness to recommend to other women depending on the misoprstole dose was found. More studies are needed on medical abortion in Greece, for a better understanding of the phenomenon, with an emphasis on the frequency of medical abortions nationwide, symptoms and complications of medical abortion, as well as women's satisfaction.
