The Idea of Sacred in the Work of the Composer John Tavener (1944-2013): Analysis of the Works Composed Between 1977-2000
Summary:
This dissertation attempts to comment on the concept of sacred in the work of the English composer John Tavener (1944-2013) and especially in the corpus of works composed between 1977-2000. During this period the tradition of the Christian Orthodox Church was the main influence concerning the composer's compositional process. Therefore, this body of works forms a unity, which constitutes a safe starting point for research. This concept, the idea of sacred in this context, is defined by the author as the relationship between the formal musical properties of each work and the theological essence of the text that is being used. Hence, it must be underlined that this study focuses on vocal works. That is, works in which there is a vocalization of text. The author places the musical analyses of works at the absolute center in order to articulate a theoretical discourse, which will also function as a prerequisite for the discussion about the compositional process and the relationship between music and text, i.e. the strategy according to which the composer treats texts in a compositional context. In reality, however, the analysis and clarification of the dipole music – logos with the most powerful tool being that of musical analysis, and always with regard to the specific body of works, highlights a more important issue; that of the relationship between the musical work and its content: that is, the way in which the work relates to the theological reality that it attempts to convey to its listener. The approach to the above complex issue makes it necessary to apply theoretical tools from different fields, such as those of theology, philosophy and history of visual arts. Indeed, the use of these tools from different fields highlights distant theoretical affinities of the composer's work with theology and Byzantine painting.
