Summary:
International literature refers to change management, in which school leadership plays a leading role. A contemporary principal of a school unit is expected to develop and cultivate skills that will help them respond efficiently to their multidimensional role, in order to cope in the best possible manner within a demanding educational environment. The purpose of this literature review is to perform a thorough inspection of the contemporary international literature from 2015 to 2022, that is related to the importance of skill cultivation of school unit principals, through a series of research that has been detected by searching scientific papers concerning change management, the importance of skill cultivation of school unit principals and leadership in the educational environment. The sample is comprised of thirty five (35) scientific papers that were published in English from 2015 to 2022 and concern the relationship between the concepts under examination, which are change management, the importance of skill cultivation of school unit principals and leadership in the educational environment. The sample collection took place in 2022, at the Prefecture of Athens, Greece, which was thoroughly deconstructed until the first six months of 2023. The literature review of the present paper showed that the psychoemotional skills and emotional intelligence of the school unit principal have a significant effect on the alertness and attitude of educators towards effective management change. Furthermore, transformational leadership behavior, practices of distributed and instructional leadership and leadership without exclusions are the predominant and most successful forms of leadership in educational institutions, while the success of a change in an educational environment depends to a large extend on the participation in professional growth-training-education programs, the academic qualifications and the lifelong learning ability of the principal.
