The utilization of comics as an educational tool for teaching the English language in primary education
Summary:
Narration describes a story or event using words, writing, pictures or other media. Narrative is an important means of expression and communication and has evolved significantly through history.
One form of narrative is comic books, which are the favourite genre among young children. Stories emerge in an attractive and playful way through the images of the comic, thus complementing the text and offering children the opportunity to learn while having fun.
Teaching and successful learning of English requires creative and effective approaches. One such approach is comic books, which have several advantages as they provide visual support, entertainment, motivation, promotion of creativity and improvement of writing and reading skills.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of comics as an educational tool for teaching the English language in primary education. The paper was structured in two parts, a theoretical and a research one, with the first exploring the concepts of narrative and comics and their relationship with teaching and the second presenting the findings of the survey which followed the quantitative methodology using a questionnaire. According to the findings, it is found that the teachers who frequently use comics as a means of teaching English agree to a greater extent that the use of comics in teaching would attract the interest of current students with respect to those who rarely use comics, and that the inhibiting factors for the use and application of comics (classic/digital) in English language teaching do not differ with respect to the level of ICT knowledge. Finally, it was found that as the teachers' degree of agreement that using comics makes English language teaching more interactive and fun increases, the degree of agreement that it can improve students' performance in written and oral language skills also increases.
