Abstract
Views and expectations of mothers of children with disabilities regarding their children's transition to adulthood: an emancipatory research approach.
The active attitude of the parents of children with disabilities promotes their active participation in planning the transition to adulthood, strengthening their children's living possibilities in independent environments, improving their self-determination and ensuring a quality social life. There has been a lot of research on parenting, as well as planning for the transition to adulthood at international and local levels. On the contrary, qualitative researches of emancipatory approach in population of parents and even more of disabled people themselves are much less.
This research, through the interpretive emancipatory approach, attempts to investigate the voices of the mothers of children with disabilities themselves, the perceptions, expectations, obstacles and suggestions they put forward regarding the transition to adulthood of their children, the importance and necessity of creative employment and professional employment.
The topic and research questions were reformulated after discussion among the mothers in the sample and were not imposed by the researcher. At each stage of the research, the mothers were asked to express their opinions and criticism about the research questions. The research tool used was individual semi-structured interviews. The feasibility sample consisted of six mothers of children with disabilities, together with the author-researcher as she is a mother of a child with disabilities. The invitation to mothers to participate in this research clarified the principles of the socio-cultural approach to disability and inclusive education. The method of analyzing the findings followed the thematic content analysis.
The findings of this research showed that the majority of mothers consider education and the development of daily life skills to be a key prerequisite for the transition to adulthood and the autonomy of their children. Also, the intention of the mothers of children who have children with and without disabilities to not discriminate in the way their two children grow up, maintaining a common attitude with visions and aspirations in a general direction regarding their adulthood, emerged. Additionally, the theme of emerging adulthood emerged. Among the proposals of the mothers regarding the transition to adulthood of their children was the training of young people with disabilities to take up work in educational organizations and/or Social Cooperative Enterprises (Coinsep), which can be set up by the parents themselves. Also, their paid work in actions or workplaces that Coinsep can create or free living in the Supported Living Shelter as remunerative pay for their work. The desired environment for independent living by mothers is either the personal residence of the disabled adult under the supervision/supervision of the parent or carer or the Supported Living Shelters, in the urban fabric, with specialized staff and organization that will respect the wishes, privacy , the personality and individual choices of the children.
