Summary:
In recent years, changes have been observed in key pillars of Greek compulsory education such as an increase in school autonomy, strengthening of the principal’s role and implementation of external teacher evaluation. These measures converge with aspects of the administrative model of New Public Management (NPM) whose main idea is the transfer of private sector practices to the public sector. According to literature, the successful implementation of its measures is proportionate to the framework they are introduced to. Therefore, for its integrated understanding, NPM’s course will be studied initially in continental European countries and afterwards in the Greek public sector. In the former case, it appears that the adoption of its measures led to the renewal of the existing Weberian model, while in the latter its influence seems to be limited. Finally, particular emphasis will be placed on its promotion by the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
