The effects of Mindfulness traits on school teachers’ stress
Summary:
Teachers’ stress and burnout are common problems in the educational system. Mindfulness seems to play an important role in reducing teachers’ stress and can facilitate their well-being both on personal and professional levels. This thesis investigates the relationship between mindfulness and teachers’ stress in Greece. Specifically, the research is observational with a descriptive approach, aiming to examine the effects of mindfulness traits on teachers’ stress levels. It investigates whether there is a correlation between mindfulness traits and stress, whether mindfulness traits can predict low stress levels, and whether there are gender differences in mindfulness and stress.
The sample consisted of 431 primary and secondary educators aged 18-65, selected through convenience sampling. The standardized questionnaires used were the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) and the Sources of Occupational Stress Questionnaire. According to the results, there is a strong, statistically significant negative correlation between mindfulness and the five stress factors. The most statistically significant negative correlation concerns mindfulness and lack of professional support, with a value of -0.230, p < .001. Mindfulness is a statistically significant negative predictor of teachers’ stress across the five subdimensions. Additionally, there were statistically significant gender differences (men-women) in four of the six variables studied.
The conclusion of this research is that there is a negative correlation between mindfulness and the five stress factors, meaning that higher mindfulness scores are associated with lower stress levels among participants.
