Personality traits and schizotypy in young adult cannabis users
Summary:
Cannabis is now one of most widely used psychoactive substances and there seems to be growing interest in the scientific research community on the problematic use of cannabis partly due to concerns related to its increasing availability, its legalisation, increasing demands for treatment and the potential health risks to both the physical and mental health of users. The association between cannabis use and specific personality traits as well as schizotypal personality traits can play a crucial role in understanding, preventing and treating the phenomenon of addiction.
The main aim of the present study was to investigate a) the association between personality traits based on the Five Factor Model with cannabis use and b) the variations in schizotypal personality traits between cannabis users and non-users.
A study was conducted in a convenience sample of 585 young adults aged 18-30 years, with an average age of 24,5 years (SD:3,4). After collecting demographic data, the questionnaires used were the CUDIT-R questionnaire to measure cannabis use, the NEO-FFI questionnaire for personality traits and the SPQ-b to measure schizotypy. The statistical program SPSS 28 was used for statistical analysis.
Statistically significant differences between cannabis users and non-users were found, with women having lower rates of use. Cannabis use was found to be associated with higher levels of neuroticism (p<0.001) and openness to experience (p=0.039) as well as lower levels of conscientiousness (p<0.001), agreeableness (p=0.011) and extraversion (p<0.001). In addition, associations were found between cannabis use and schizotypy (p<0.001) as well as each of its three dimensions, cognitive-perceptual (p=0.009), interpersonal (p<0.001) and disorganized (p<0.001).
Results confirmed the research hypotheses regarding the relationship of personality traits and schizotypy with cannabis use. These data can be used both in the prevention and treatment of cannabis dependence in young people and to provide a basis for further investigation of the phenomenon.
