Social Pedagogy and Intercultural Education: The development of intercultural competence in primary school children through teaching intervention
Summary:
This thesis concerns the development of intercultural competence in primary school children through teaching intervention.Intercultural competence refers to the attitudes, knowledge and skills that lead a person to be able to come into contact and interact with persons from different cultures and develop positive relationships with them. The necessity for the development and strengthening of this ability is evident from the multicultural nature of modern society. The school tries to highlight otherness, respect for the different other, as well as aims to solve problematic educational and social situations. The purpose of the research is to check whether it is possible through an appropriate teaching intervention for the school to influence the development of the students' intercultural competence. The research was conducted on 3rd grade elementary school children, through a didactic intervention in the experimental group, and their intercultural competence was assessed through a questionnaire with closed-type questions, and through a semi-structured interview in both the experimental and control groups before and after the intervention. The results of the research showed that some aspects of intercultural competence were developed and mainly intercultural understanding. The results are compared with those of similar studies and show that the implementation of teaching interventions leads to the development of students' intercultural competence. In the paper, the limitations of its conclusions are pointed out, and proposals for pedagogical applications are formulated in terms of planning, implementing and evaluating similar teaching interventions for primary school students, as well as conducting similar research in the future.
