Burnout Syndrome In Surgeons And Its Correlation With The Lack Of Axiological Properties: The Importance Of A Sociopedagogical Approach
Summary:
Since 1974, when Herbert Freudenberger first introduced the concept of Burnout, the research gap has been continuously filled with new studies, which explain and analyze the risk and protective factors, as well as the individual characteristics of people who suffer from Burnout Syndrome (BS). It is now established that the majority of Surgical specialties display high levels of BS. However, it is evident that the correlated factors are multiple and varied, depending on the time context, surrounding circumstances, psychological statement of the individual, considering also certain social and demographic characteristics of individuals (Bartholomew et al. 2018; Dimou et al, 2016). At the same time, BS has often been linked to depression and to the existence of dysfunctional perceptions in general. Social Pedagogy, aims to solve social, ethical and humanistic problems in a holistic and global way (Mylonakou - Keke, 2013, p. 121), and BS is creating clear guidance and coping needs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the multiple expressions of BS in Surgeons at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and its correlation with the lack of identity, adaptation & creativity. The sample was 50 Surgeons of the NKUA Medical School with Academic careers, of which 47 were male and 3 were female. The psychometric instruments administered were the Maslach Burnout Inventory - MBI (Maslach & Jackson, 1981), aiming to measure the existing levels of BS, and the Dysfunctional Preconceptions Questionnaire - DPQ (Vassiliadou & Goldberg, 2006), to measure the existence of dysfunctional perceptions in the participants. The necessity of the present research is deemed sizable, because through it, key objectives of Social Pedagogy are related to key characteristics of the individual in correlation to BS. Specifically, the displays of BS in the medical community have not been examined in the past, through the research of dysfunctional perceptions, as well as through the perspective of Social Pedagogy, which has the ability to provide an important basis for treatment and prevention actions. In conclusion, the significance of the findings is discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages are considered further.
