Prematurity and psychological effects on mother: A systematic review
Summary:
Background/purpose: Premature birth poses a significant health challenge for mothers, with far-reaching implications for their mental well-being. This systematic review aims to examine the psychological consequences of preterm birth in mothers and highlights interventions which focus to improve maternal mental health. A comprehensive understanding of these implications can enhance the quality of support and care provided to mothers experiencing preterm birth.
Methods: Α systematic review was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, & PsycINFO databases. The search was restricted to studies published in the last 20 years (2003-2023).
Results: This review assesses interventions for mothers of preterm infants, emphasizing narrative writing, early interventions, relaxation therapy, and skin-to-skin care. These approaches effectively reduce maternal stress, enhance mother-infant interaction, and strengthen the parent-child bond. The study recommends preventive and communication-focused interventions for maternal mental health support. It underscores the role of perceived social care and support in elevating maternal optimism and reducing postpartum depression symptoms.
Conclusions: The review emphasizes the diverse impact of preterm birth on maternal mental health, highlighting interventions like Family Nurture and massage. Maternal involvement, coupled with psychological support, is crucial for addressing postpartum challenges. The promotion of maternal optimism is identified as key for overall well-being. Integrating psychological interventions into routine care is deemed essential for supporting mothers affected by preterm birth. The review concludes by underscoring the need for additional research to enhance understanding and develop sustainable strategies for maternal mental health.
