Recalled parental acceptance-rejection and depressive symptoms in young adulthood: Adult attachment as a mediating factor
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between remembered parental rejection and depressive symptoms during emerging adulthood, as well as to ascertain the possible mediating role of adult attachment in the aforementioned relationship. For this purpose, a short demographic questionnaire, the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire for Adults, the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised and the Beck Depression Inventory II were used as data collection tools. These questionnaires were completed by a sample of 118 participants, aged 18 to 29 years, of whom 40 were male and 78 were female. The results of the research showed statistically significant differences in terms of the anxious adult bond, the avoidant adult bond and depressive symptoms, depending on whether or not the sample participated in individual psychotherapy. Additionally, a statistically significant positive correlation was observed between the remembered parental rejection and the development of depressive symptomatology during emerging adulthood. Furthermore, both anxious and avoidant adult attachment appeared to mediate the relationship between remembered parental rejection and depressive symptoms. Therefore, the above findings underline the necessity of carrying out prevention and intervention programs, both at the level of parental practices and at the level of the adult bond, to combat depressive symptoms in the general population.
