“Utilization of fundamental concepts of Geography and appropriate activities to approach the Covid-19 pandemic, by prospective teachers.”
Summary:
This master’s thesis delves into the utilization of fundamental concepts of Geography by the prospective teachers, for the teaching challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It scrutinizes the incorporation of geographical concepts through proposed activities and teaching methods as they are proposed by pre service teachers. In addition, the teaching scenarios crafted by the prospective educators and the themes they choose are examined. Finally, reference is made to the future dimension of the Curriculum chosen by prospective teachers to activate through their teaching scenarios.
Quantitative research was conducted, through content analysis, on a sample of written response essays (N=203) of third-year students of the Department of Elementary Education E.K.P.A. The content was quantified based on coding. The results in general showed that the majority of students successfully manage to teach geographic concepts through activities that incorporate the pandemic. The proper teaching of the concept "time" though, presents a slight difficulty. The "didactic discussion" and "group work", are the most popular teaching methods used, while the "argumentation" as a method used needs strengthening. The "social dimension" is advanced in the theme of the scenarios mainly through the sub-category of "good health/well-being". Finally, a significant majority of students tend to prioritize either the interpreting of the present situation or exploring correlations within their teaching practices.
