Adaptive capacities in building resilient communities to flood events
Summary:
Introduction: Flooding is a natural disaster that has always negatively affected communities, causing adverse impacts on people and infrastructure. It is observed that, in recent years, flooding events have led to a significant increase in both frequency and intensity, due to the rise of the climate crisis and human interference with the natural environment. The resilience of communities to flooding determines the extent to which communities are prepared to cope with such disturbances and recover.
Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the degree of preparedness and resilience of communities during flood events.
Methodology: Two online databases, PubMed and Cochrane Library, were used to find the final studies. The search in these databases was conducted using specific logic algorithms applied with keywords: Resilience, floods, resilience communities, adaption skills.
Results: The initial results of this research paper highlighted the tactics and actions which can really help the adaptiveness and resilience of communities facing flood emergencies. The findings of the studies include numerous aspects, such as preparedness in community, response strategies, psychological support and enhancing education in building a flood resilient community.
The results highlight the importance of proactive engagement and educational initiatives within local communities for disaster preparedness, such as investing in infrastructure and strengthening education.
Conclusions: The meaning of community resilience to flood threats is multifaceted, including physical, social, economic and environmental components. It is very important to understand how much the preparedness of a population will contribute when faced with disasters such as floods and will be able to cope and return to everyday life, thus strengthening the resilience of the community. Preparedness is the first line of defense against the adverse effects of floods. The involvement of the health sector in the preparedness part when it comes to disasters is crucial and the findings highlight the urgent need for a strong health care infrastructure in natural disaster events. The health sector plays an indispensable role in strengthening the resilience of communities to flooding. From preparedness and immediate response to long-term recovery and resilience building.
