Summary:
The aim of this study was the design and implementation of a teaching intervention
targeting the difficulties that the 3rd grade primary school students encounter while
solving verbal and open-ended mathematical problems. In order to achieve this
objective, a design research was developed that was carried out in two cycles. The
aim of the second cycle was to confirm the results of the first one. In order to find,
record and confirm the students' misconceptions, diagnostic tests were given both in
the first and second cycles. Based on the results of the diagnosis, the proposals of the
relevant literature and the principles of Realistic Mathematical Education, two
teaching interventions were designed that were based on appropriately selected verbal
problems and the use of tables as auxiliary tools. In the teaching intervention of the
second cycle, the visualization of the problem through a simple drawing was used as
an additional auxiliary tool. The interventions were completed with final tests taken
by the students. The analysis of the research data initially confirmed the current
literature regarding the difficulty for male and female students in solving open word
problems and presenting correct and comprehensive answers. Nevertheless, the
teaching interventions of both cycles seemed to have had a positive effect on the
children's performance, a fact that was also confirmed by the results of the final tests.
