Anesthesia in war times-surgical teams and mobile surgery in the field
Summary:
The armed conflicts as they have been taking shape in the last two centuries and especially in the last few years, have necessitated the continued development of war medicine and the expansion of the operation of special medical teams, with the aim of creating mobile surgeries in order to quickly and successfully deal with threats to the life injuries resulting.
During the First World War 1914-1918 Belgian doctors specially trained in anesthesia by the British army would form the core of a new specialty, "anesthesiology-resuscitation".
The rapid development of anesthesiology during the last century and especially after the end of the second world war, brings it to the fore as a necessary and integral part in the treatment of any emergency situation as well as in the treatment of wounded in war zones. The thorough training of anesthesiologists and surgeons in emergency medicine, as well as the ability to operate in situations of increased readiness, vigilance and professional pressure, makes them capable of coping with the management of critically ill patients and patients in the field. The role of anesthesiologists has been decisive in many cases and mainly in the evolution of war surgery by making possible the operation of mobile surgeries in the field. Since then, during wartime conflicts, the need to manage the large number of wounded who need immediate surgical treatment, led to the creation of special teams operating in the front zones. In the midst of military conflicts, medical personnel are often required to perform surgical operations in the field under adverse conditions and challenging situations. From relevant researches comparing the number of dead in the war of Vietnam and Afghanistan it seems that there is a reduction of the number at least in half after the operation of mobile operating units and specially trained health professionals.
