Educational intervention and change in attitude: investigating the perceptions of mental health volunteers towards the first psychotic episode
Summary:
Although the mental health system in Greece has been continuously developing and evolving over the past decades, it continues to face significant challenges. The improvement of existing services and the facilitation of access to them for those in need, as well as increasing the visibility of new units to the public and destigmatizing mental illness, remain central goals for mental health professionals.

The study of public attitudes and perceptions towards mental illness is timelessly significant, as these perceptions profoundly affect the substantial psychosocial rehabilitation and social integration of patients. They also indicate the extent to which the general population is willing to seek help under similar conditions. Numerous research studies have already been conducted in this direction, examining the attitudes of mental health professionals, spouses of people with mental illness, and the general population in various geographic areas.

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate and document the attitudes and perceptions of mental health volunteers towards mental illness and then to explore the potential changes in their perceptions following a targeted educational intervention lasting three hours. Specifically, the study will examine the role that knowledge about mental health issues plays as an intervening variable, as well as the potential change in volunteers' attitudes towards seeking psychosocial support for themselves if needed.
