The perception of the sexuality of disabled people in the Home Economics textbooks of general secondary education in Cyprus
Summary:
Education is a public good provided through school. It is inextricably linked to the values and ideals of every society. Education must mature and socialize the individuals of each society. Despite the changes it has undergone over the years, it continues to perpetuate phenomena of exclusion and to reproduce inequalities.
Thus, the inclusion perspective of the educational process comes to fight for all that the traditional and established education process has established. It argues that all schools of general education should be restructured at all levels. Inclusion perspective has also sexual education because through the information that will receive the individuals-students will ensure them stronger interpersonal relationships and friendships.
For the most important reasons and many others that will be analyzed more extensively in the following research, the need to offer sexual education to people with disabilities as it is offered to their peers without any disability is presented.
This paper attempts to investigate the content of sexual education and how it is presented in the context of general secondary education in Cyprus in the inclusion perspective through the school manual of the Household Economy of the Second year in High School.
The present work was based mainly on the school manual but it could not fail to make a reference to the Analytical Program (philosophy, goals, purposes, principles) and also to the curriculum in Health Education since there falls the sexual education.
It is qualitative research in which the quality analysis of the content of the school textbook was used and specifically focused on the thematic axis: "How the sexuality of disabled students is perceived through the images of the textbook".
The findings resulting from the analysis are on the one hand the purpose and role of the school manual, the power of the image of a school manual and the myths and stereotypes that perpetuates the school. On the other hand, the school’s inability to integrate and socialise people with disabilities.
The main conclusions arising from the work are the necessity and importance of providing sexual education to persons with disabilities as well as the fact that it is the means to ensure them and to improve their quality of life that society is constantly becoming an obstacle.
