Summary:
Introduction: Heart failure, as a chronic clinical syndrome, affects the physical activity and psychological state of the patient and has negative consequences for the patient and his/her family members.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of patients with heart failure in relation to their level of physical activity and depression.
Material and Method: The sample of the study consisted of 118 patients with heart failure attending the Heart Failure Clinic of the General Hospital "Ipokrateio".The data were collected by the completion of the patients'. D.A.S.I (Duke Activity Status Index), Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS).Data analysis was performed using SPSS statistical package (Version 26) and the significance level was set at 5%..
Results: 61% of the participants were male and 51% were under 70 years of age. The degree of heart failure in 19.5% NYHA I, 40.7% NYHA II, 40.7% NYHA III, 27.1% NYHA III and 12.7% NYHA IV. More negatively rated their quality of life according to MLHFQ were older (p<0.001), unmarried/old, (p=0.001), with heart failure NYHA III, IV (p<0.001), living in the countryside, (p<0.001), with morbidity, (p<0.001). Greater depression was experienced by older patients, (p=0.005), divorced, (p<0.001), with lower educational levels, (p=0.001), and with NYHA deficiency IV, (p=0.001)
Conclusion: Quality of life and depression levels of patients with heart failure are influenced by the degree of heart failure and by their demographic and clinical characteristics
