Summary:
The present thesis examines the science of archaeology on a historical and theoretical basis in order to investigate the particular conditions that led to the establishment of prehistoric archaeology as a separate discipline in Greece. The objectives of the thesis include the promotion of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as an institution that has contributed in multiple ways to the formation of the discipline of prehistoric archaeology, as well as its establishment in future discussion on the history of archaeology in Greece. A further aim was to provide additional information on important personalities for Greek archaeology, since previously unexplored aspects of their activity and academic status were investigated. Finally, the ultimate aim of this research was to form a more complete picture of the epistemological development of the field of prehistoric archaeology in the light of the specific conditions of Greek reality. These objectives were approached through the study of the work and teaching of personalities who were active in the first and for almost a century the only Higher Educational Institution of the country and who participated in the process of establishing the new discipline. The above are explored in relation to international epistemological trends, the objective conditions that prevailed at the university in each period and major prehistoric discoveries that influenced the path towards the formation of the discipline. The relevant information was drawn from existing literature and from primary archival material. The bibliographic research was based on excavation reports, research papers and publications in the domestic and international scientific and scholarly press for the examination of the research work of the studied personalities and on teaching manuals, illustrated tables and published university lectures for the study of their teaching work. The archival material that was studied comes mainly from the Historical Archive of the University of Athens and concerns minutes of meetings of the School of Philosophy and the university Senate, numerous documents from the protocol archive and university publications.
