Dealing with the educational problems of refugee and immigrant students in the primary schools of Athens: Views of Primary Education teachers
Summary:
This thesis focuses on addressing the educational problems of refugees and immigrants. Its purpose is to investigate the opinions of Primary teachers, regarding the appropriate methods and practices to deal with the problems in question, both through strategies, which they have used or are currently using in their school class, as well as others, the possible outcomes and challenges in their implementation, as well as the wider educational and social changes they deem necessary.
To highlight the perspectives and personal experiences of the participants regarding the subject under investigation, the qualitative research method was chosen. The semi-structured interview was used as a research tool, with a sample of 14 Primary teachers, who work in schools in Athens, with a native and foreign student population.
The results obtained from the data analysis highlight the positive experience of the participants from the application of intercultural methods and practices. At the same time, their limited knowledge on issues of intercultural education and their unpreparedness, or readiness almost exclusively based on their experience, in teaching the children in question. The participants with their answers confirmed the importance of implementing such practices found in the literature, enriching them with their own suggestions. However, they pointed out the serious difficulties and challenges that accompany the attempt to implement them in today's school.
Despite the multiple benefits of these methods and practices on a cognitive, emotional and social level for all students, they found that they are not enough to address the educational problems of children of other origins, if they are not combined with more comprehensive educational and primarily social changes.
