Impact of antidiabetic drugs on body weight
Summary:
Obesity is a chronic disease with negative impact upon the health and the quality of life of patients. It is correlated with diseases, like for example diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Its alarmingly growing incidence demands timely identification and prompt treatment. In patients, who do not accomplish the desired weight loss despite the efforts with diet and exercise, initialization of drug treatment under particular circumstances is recommended. Some specific categories of antidiabetic medications, which apart from their benefit in glycemic control, have a positive impact on body weight, claim a position of great importance.
The aim of this systematic review is to imprint the current scientific literature regarding the effect of antidiabetic medications on body weight, including both the traditional antidiabetic drugs and the newer treatments against diabetes mellitus.
In this particular thesis a large scientific database using key words concerning specific antidiabetic medications and body weight were used.
The antidiabetic drugs can have positive, negative or neutral impact on the patients’ body weight. Many studies underline the combinative use of drugs/ hygiene and dietary measures with overall benefit upon the metabolic status of patients with or without diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, of great interest is the study of the potential correlation of adverse effects from the gastrointestinal system in accordance with the treatment induced weight loss, particularly in case of incretin mimetic medications.
In conclusion, it appears that GLP-1 analogs and SGLT-2 inhibitors have the greatest positive impact on body weight, while tirzepatide constitutes a highly promising treatment option. In any case clinicians must be alert, assessing carefully the adverse effects of the drugs and encouraging the patients to adopt a more holistic approach of their disease, ie which is not merely based upon drug treatment.
